Did you realize that God made laughter? It was not something that I thought about until about a year ago. We – humans – didn’t just wake up and laugh one day. God created us with the ability to laugh!
HAHA HAHA! I love to laugh!
How thoughtful of God to give us the joy of laughing! A throaty chuckle. A good hard belly laugh. Even the occasional snort. My favorites are audible smiles (a Na’omi-ism), you know those smiles you smile so hard you make a joyful noise? Some of the best sounds come from audible smiles.
LAUGHTER IS GOOD FOR YOU
A few weeks ago I did a devotional on laughter. (P.S. if you haven’t signed up for my weekly devotionals click HERE TO SIGN UP NOW). In said devotional I shared, laughter has been scientifically proven to be good for you. WebMD said when we laugh, muscles in our faces and bodies stretch, our heart rates and blood pressures go up, and we breathe faster, which takes oxygen throughout our bodies faster. Also, laughter is like a mini workout. A mini workout! That must be why our sides hurt when we laugh super hard.
Proverbs 17: 22 says:
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up bones.
Laughter can also improve our moods. I know that there are times in life when we are so low we don’t feel like laughing. But sometimes that is exactly what we need to do. I like to put on a good comedy or watch a little bit of Tim Hawkins on YouTube. However, the absolute best way to laugh is with other people. Jay and I like playing games, especially with friends and family, we have created so many good memories just laughing while we play. Good Times!
Laughter is good medicine! It helps us restore our emotions to a positive frame of mind and can connect us with the people we are laughing with. I don’t remember where I learned that when we laugh with people it increases our positive frame of mind even more.
LAUGHTER INCREASES HAPPINESS … WHICH AFFECTS YOUR JOY
I am a firm believer that Jesus needs to be our Joy. Do you know that old church song, “the joy of the Lord, the joy of the Lord, the joy of the Lord is our strength?” I love that song. And it is so true! Finding our Joy in Jesus means that even when we are sad we are ‘still good.’ For example, Jay and I are going through a tough time at the moment and it has brought us to a place where we are struggling emotionally. But … because we have our Joy in Jesus we can stand or kneel and say that God is good, that life is still so good, so sweet.
Happiness is temporary. Joy is in Jesus.
While the scriptures don’t specifically tell us to laugh, I think the more joy someone
has the more they laugh. The more they laugh the more joy they have. Throughout Psalms and Proverbs, we see the benefits of laughter.
Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them.
GOD LOVES US AND WANTS US TO LAUGH
A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
I think that God gave us laughter to help us renew our attitudes and restore us from emotional down times. He gave us laughter as a joy and a comfort. Laughing is one of the best avenues to connect with people.
Like tears are a release for sadness and after we feel better. Laughter is a release for happiness and joy, and it makes us feel even better than we cry. There are times to laugh and times to cry and God gave us both. I for one, am very thankful He did.
So I encourage you … look for a reason to laugh, even if it’s just an audible smile. Don’t be afraid to be silly. Share your laughter. Share the joy that comes with the laughter. Even when times are hard and life is overly tough … dig down, find your joy in Jesus, and laugh anyway.
Now … I can’t do a post on laughter and not leave you with some laughs. Personally, I’m not sure how funny I am, so I will leave you with a warrior in Christ who God made super funny: Chonda Pierce.
